Guitar chords
I’ve been playing guitar for about 40 years off-and-on. Even so, I don’t have every guitar chord memorized, not even close. Here are some useful websites to help you find the fingering for a guitar chord, as well as what chords you can put together to make your own songs.
Chordbook.Com. This is a good, basic site that will show you the open versions of chords. It shows you the finger, fret, and string to use, and also has a “strum” button you can use to find out what the chord sounds like. Easy to use.
Brian’s huge chordlist collection. This site only displays the major, minor, 7th, and minor 7th chords, but it has a nice printable chart of them all on one page. Another nice feature of this site is that it also has chord charts for the most popular alternate tunings, if you’re into that.
ChordFind.Com. This site offers the greatest number of chords, which is nice in itself, but it also has a great feature: you can click the “variation” button and it will show you all the alternate fingerings of a given chord.
Music Theory For Songwriters. Even if it’s not the most fun thing to learn, music theory is still good to know. However, the thing I really like about this site isn’t the theory, it’s the chord maps (scroll down towards the bottom of the page to see “The Big Map” in each major key). These maps are magic…they show what chord progressions sound good together. The instructions for using the map are here.
Money Chords. This site has it all…chord charts, guitar lessons, theory, the characteristics of certain styles of music, and more.
